An overview

What proximity-based discovery actually means

Location-aware platforms have changed how people find others nearby. This page explains the mechanics behind them — how proximity is estimated, how shared interests narrow the field, and what controls people are given over their own visibility.

  2. 02 Shared interests Why overlap matters more than distance alone

  4. 04 Safety How communities are moderated in practice
1

Distance is estimated, not pinpointed

Proximity-based platforms rarely work with a precise position. They convert a device signal into a coarse area — a neighbourhood, a radius, a grid cell — and discard the precision that is left over. What another person sees is a rough band of distance, not a point on a street.

That generalisation is deliberate. It keeps the useful part of location, which is relevance, and removes the part that creates risk. Two people who are both active in the same part of a city share context worth surfacing. Neither needs to know where the other sleeps.

2

Overlap matters more than distance alone

Distance on its own is a weak signal. Thousands of people are physically close to each other at any moment and have nothing in common. Interest overlap is what turns a list of nearby accounts into something worth reading.

Most systems weight the two against each other. A strong overlap further away often ranks above a weak overlap next door. The result is a feed shaped by shared context — the things people do, follow, and care about — with proximity acting as a filter rather than the whole answer.

3

Presence is something you control

Visibility is usually a set of switches rather than a single on-off state. Who can see a profile, whether it appears in a nearby view at all, how closely distance is reported, and whether activity is shown are typically separate settings.

Good implementations make the default position the conservative one and require a deliberate action to widen it. The person deciding how visible they are should be the person the visibility belongs to.

  • Discovery Appear in nearby views, or remain unlisted entirely.
  • Distance precision Report an approximate band instead of a fine radius.
  • Activity Show or hide when an account was last active.
  • Audience Limit who can start a conversation before any contact happens.
4

Moderation is infrastructure, not a feature

Reporting flows, profile verification, automated detection and human review are the load-bearing parts of any platform where strangers are introduced to each other. They are also the parts most visible when they fail, which is why mature services publish their standards rather than hiding them.

  • Reporting should take fewer steps than the behaviour being reported.
  • Verification signals should be legible without exposing personal documents.
  • Community standards should be written in plain language and publicly linked.

Questions

Common questions

Does proximity-based discovery reveal an exact location?
Typically no. A coarse area is stored and a band of distance is shown, so the underlying precision never reaches other accounts.
Why are shared interests weighted so heavily?
Distance alone produces a long, undifferentiated list. Overlap in what people follow and do gives the list a reason to exist.
Can someone stay completely unlisted?
In most implementations, yes. Discovery is a separate switch from having an account, and the conservative state is the default.
Who reviews reports?
A combination of automated detection and human review. Mature services publish how each stage works and what outcomes are possible.
